SUMMARY:Member Event:: Free Talk with a Beer Chemist: Yeast Monitoring & Contamination Detection
DESCRIPTION:Join us in our taproom for a free talk about yeast monitoring and contamination detection with Kelley Freeman from Beyers Analytical Brewing Sciences.\n\n\n\nThis informative presentation will cover: \n\n\n\n- How to do yeast cell counts and the calculations used for yeast propagation\n\n- What medias to use for yeast detection\, yeast storage (yeast slants)\, and yeast contamination\n\n- Bacterial contamination\, media to use for detection\, and ways to ID which bacteria are present\n\n- Different detection techniques\, selective media platting\, PCR\, and sequencing (how they work\, what data you get from each\, and how to use that data). \n\n- Basic lab equipment that can be used to start monitoring your microbes. \n\n\n\nThere will be plates with different microbes growing for examples of colony morphology on different selective media. And after the presentation we will have a microscope set up for anyone who wants to take a look at yeast\, bacteria\, or do yeast cell counts. \n\n\n\nPlease sign up here - https://brewmented.wufoo.com/forms/p9uyuks1iaibix/\n\n\n\nKelley Freeman received her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and biology from Valparaiso University. She is a TTB-certified beer chemist and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the analytical testing laboratory at Beyers Analytical Brewing Sciences\, LLC. Her specialties include microbiology\, analytical chemistry\, and quality control. Kelley is a Member of ASBC\, BA\, Colorado Brewers Guild\, Pink Boots Society\, is a board member for the Rocky Mountain district MBAA\, on the MBAA technical committee\, and on the MBAA food safety committee. She also works closely with CSU to help mentor students in the Fermentation Science program\, by giving out internships or mentoring students on their senior projects.
